![]() The pacing is very uneven, the heroine is annoying to the point of being TSTL and there is a lot of info-dumping going on, whether as back-story or setting up future books and Ms Chown’s narration, while decent, isn’t sufficiently engaging as to be able to carry the listener through those portions of the story that are, shall we say, less than interesting. ![]() Unfortunately, however, My Wicked Marquess is a bit of a mess. Annette Chown is a new-to-me narrator (and from reading an interview with her posted on Ms Foley’s website, it seems she’s fairly new to the world of audiobook narration, too), but I like to give new narrators a chance – everyone has to start somewhere, after all! ![]() My Wicked Marquess is the first book in Gaelen Foley’s Inferno Club series, and having enjoyed reading some of the later books, I was pleased to see this appear in audio format. ![]() ![]() More than a million sales later, you might be tempted to view the story of Hulme's success as yet another example of the short-sightedness of most publishers and the need for artists to stick to their guns in the face of philistine editors. When they sold out and so did the next 2,000, Spiral approached Hodder and Stoughton in New Zealand, who shifted another 20,000 and brought it to the attention of the Booker judges. First there was the monumental effort of writing it over a 12-year period, then the fact that nearly every publisher rejected it out of hand. The buzz when The Bone People won the Booker prize in 1986 was all about the struggle Keri Hulme had to bring it to publication. ![]() ![]() When “Breath” released, it was immediately a Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Los Angeles Times, Sunday London Times Top 10 bestseller and was translated into thirty languages in 2021. With “Old Man Logan” Millar has crafted one of the most pleasing Wolverine stories in memory. But worry not, Millar finds blood to spill and plenty of it over the course of the eight chapters that make up this fun-filled jaunt across a post-apocalyptic Marvel Universe. This is a tricky place to start a story when the protagonist is so closely associated with ferocity and the writer is so adept at glorifying violence. He wanders off to lead a peaceful life, far from the violence that defined him for the first half of his life. When the event occurs, it is clear why Logan has given up the will to fight and the desire to be the best he is at what he does. Writer Mark Millar waits until the midpoint of “Wolverine: Old Man Logan” to show us what it is to tear down a hero to the point where there is just nothing left but the shell of a man. We don’t understand exactly what has happened to the hero when the story opens. He’s been taken down so many notches that there just aren’t any more notches left. Logan gets pulled back into action against his will in “Old Man Logan”. ![]() |
